With Mother’s Day around the corner, our thoughts center on those fabulous women in our lives, who through thick and thin, love us, support us, and make us feel a little like a kid. Whether they are related to us biologically or not, we all have mother-figures in our lives who deserve to know how much they are valued.

I can proudly list hundreds of reasons why I appreciate my mother, but recently, I am particularly grateful for our special relationship with Pilates. My own career in Pilates was jump-started by my mom’s dedication to the method. In an effort to become healthier, stronger, and a few pounds lighter before my wedding, my mom hit Pilates training hard to discover not only that it worked but that she loved it. She invited me along to a few of her classes, and I was quickly and seriously hooked.

There is something uniquely wonderful about doing Pilates with Mom…

It is time spent between only us. It’s “our thing.”

A bit of our competitive edge ignites. When I want to give up, I discreetly glance at mom, who is lighting it up on the mat. If mom can kick butt, so can I.

We commiserate over the challenges (that Magic Circle workout was killer!). And celebrate the little victories (did you see my Teaser today!?!).

We are united in our quest for good health. Our commitment to taking care of ourselves means longer and happier lives for us both.

Those lovely endorphins. Even if we disagree from time to time, it is hard to be in a bad mood after a sweat-drenched workout.

So, to you, Mom - thank you for inspiring me to step onto the mat, for motivating me to pursue my passions and to persevere when I’m petered out.

Whether you are in a position to do Pilates with your mother or not, I urge you to get active with her. It is amazing what movement can do for our bodies and our relationships. Happy Mother’s Day.
